“Is it Savage-caliber?” 

This is the question a former colleague would ask himself when he would critique his own work. I was surprised when I heard this, but it reinforced in me that it is possible to do good work and be kind at the same time. While I can be confident in the work that I create, I am honored when others deem it worthy of merit. 

One particular instance was when a piece for St. Monica Girls School in Uganda received one of only two national ADDYs presented to an Oregon-based creative firm (I also happened to have won the other one as well). While it was quite the recognition, it gave me greater joy when the school’s matriarch, Sister Rosemary, was named as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.

Another instance was when Mohawk Fine Papers selected 3 different pieces as commercial examples to showcase their paper’s printing capabilities. At the time, their representative stated that it was unprecedented to have that many reprints in a 13-month period.

Hopefully, by challenging myself to continue to do good work, it will inspire the same in others.
